STATUS:
Once a former labourers’ camp within the historic Forbach Sugar Estate in Mauritius, the HEI Kindergarten breathes new life into a site of memory, transforming it into a place of light, discovery and play. The longère typology — with its stone walls, courtyards and communal kitchens — is reinterpreted as a contemporary early-learning environment where the spirit of history meets the imagination of childhood. The design honours the authenticity of the past while inviting in daylight, colour and movement. Classrooms open onto generous, shaded courtyards that extend learning beyond the walls, fostering interaction with nature and community. Locally sourced stone, timber and metal are complemented by gentle tones and tactile finishes, rooting the architecture in its Mauritian context and creating a calm, nurturing atmosphere.Sustainability guides the project from concept to detail. Adaptive reuse, passive cooling strategies and carefully shaded openings reduce energy demand while preserving comfort and character. The result is a sensitive and joyful environment — one where education, heritage and landscape coexist seamlessly, and where the next generation learns in harmony with the stories that shaped the place.
